Did George Washington Sleep Here?
We can’t say, but he did visit the area and met with General “Mad Anthony” Wayne, who is buried in the St. David’s Church Cemetery just down the road. In the 1870's the tract is shown on maps of the Main Line of the Pennsylvania Railroad as "Edgefield", the Adler estate. Bordana Adler was bequeathed the property from her father for “$1.00 and all her love.” She married T. Mellon Rogers who lived in the house from 1897-1917. Rogers was appointed in 1897 by The Daughters of the American Revolution as the restoration architect for Independence Hall. The property passed to relatives of Pearl Buck, then to William A. Gray, a prominent Philadelphia Lawyer and District Attorney.
Along the way, 'Edgefield' was renamed 'Cedar Lawn'. The original property comprised 96 acres extending to the old site of the Devon Hotel.
